Blog#4 Media Literacy & Public Discourse

The benefits and risks of reaching the public in the media

For public figures, reaching out to the masses in the media obviously increases their visibility, and higher visibility means that the views they express will be shared by more people, and this is true for lawyers. This is especially important for government officials, etc. In addition, through the media, public figures can interact more directly with their followers, which can increase the loyalty of their followers. Conversely, as exposure deepens, this can also create certain risks, such as exposure of privacy or cyber-violence.

how to address negative replies and critiques

Emotional expressions on the Internet are usually more extreme than in current life, and as long as people can recognize this, they can remain calm under negative comments. Conflicts happen more often on the Internet, and it’s just strangers you’re in conflict with, so people don’t have to take it personally.

Why factual information and media literacy conflict

For some non-authoritative media outlets, visibility and money may be important motivators for their releases. For this reason the media can distort the facts, either by adding personal positions or political preferences. This creates a conflict with factual information. In addition, there is misleading information that may be further amplified by the high speed of dissemination. For people with low media literacy, it is difficult to distinguish between the correctness and incorrectness of a large amount of information.

What is the benefit of having a PLN that values media literacy?

Culture has a subtle effect on people. Having a PLN that values media literacy will allow you to gradually improve your ability to evaluate and validate media operations or information. Find the information that is truly useful to you in the midst of a lot of distortion or disinformation, and become a person who is not influenced by disinformation.

  1. I think in response to negative comments on social media we need to selectively ignore comments that have no value because people are not accountable in most cases for making statements and opinions on social media, so in this case, not all negative comments are considered or debated by the posters. Having corresponding critical thinking may give us a more objective attitude towards comments on social media.

  2. I really agree with more of your thoughts. Especially agree with “There are usually more emotional expressions on the Internet than in life now, and people can keep calm under negative comments.” If someone doesn’t like your favorite idol and writes abusive words on Weibo or any public social media software And words with life attacks. Fans who like idols will fight back when they see it, and scold each other. This makes the web a battleground for influencing the peaceful environment of social media platforms.
