Blog#1 Digital Identity

Let’s start with a basic concept

Digital identity, that sounds pretty sci-fi, doesn’t it? So, what exactly is digital identity and what can it be used for. Before we can do that, we need to understand what digital space is. A digital space is an “other world” built by the Internet. Similar to the real world, the digital space also needs people and things, but everything in this world is digital. Well, this does not seem to explain anything, because this is indeed an unreal and ethereal thing. When a person appears in digital space in the form of a number, that is his digital identity.

SO, WHAT?

You might think, “Oh, what’s the point of replicating a world like digital space?” . But if digital identity can be “customized”, then everything will be different. People can develop their own identity in digital space and the people they see will reacquaint themselves with you as a stranger. It’s almost as if you become Nuwa (a Chinese god who, in mythology, turned clay into human beings). In a digital space, you meet new people and experience a new life with a new identity, and that sounds great. When there was no Internet, this kind of socializing was called a masquerade.

More importantly, digital space does gradually affect the real world. The bank account you set up in the digital space, or the ID card, can be used in the real world through some terminals. Smartphone is one of the most popular terminals, which is indeed very convenient, isn’t it?

But, please be careful

There are some bad guys in the real world, and there are also in digital space. These guys will try to find out the real world you by the traces you set in your own digital identity. It’s almost as bad as ripping off your mask at a masquerade, and they’ll even take your mask to open your home’s facial recognition lock. There will also be some people who bully there because the digital space is virtual. While this doesn’t cause physical harm, we all know that it’s the psychological damage of bullying that is more important. So, while enjoying your new life in digital space, don’t forget to protect yourself!

  1. Thank you for sharing your blog with great content. In digital space, we don’t need to align ourselves with our real-life selves. We can share and record our life in digital space, make new friends, and also expand our interests. There are indeed many unfriendly phenomena in the digital space, we need to protect our privacy and we can’t trust everything in the digital space.
