Blog#5 PLN & education

Which social media platforms are beneficial in education?

In fact, many social media platforms can be helpful for education. Among them, I think some chatting platforms and some video platforms are the most effective in helping learning. Chat platforms can bring together students and teachers in a class into a community, such as Mattermost, which we are using now, where students and teachers can communicate very easily. And I think it’s far more efficient to communicate online than face-to-face because everyone will have enough time and awareness to review their statements before posting them to see if they are worthwhile. For video platforms, video platforms such as YouTube are available for teachers or peers to post videos that they agree with or that they have created. In addition, there are other people who specialize in a certain field who post their own videos for discussion.

When working with the vulnerable sector, how does social media fit into professionalism and regulations?

Regarding how social media fits in with vulnerable groups, I think that’s part of the inclusiveness of social media. The inclusiveness of social media allows disadvantaged groups to also enjoy an equal identity with everyone else on the web. The professionalism of social platforms is also reflected in the equality. Treating all people equally on social media is the most basic rule for treating disadvantaged people. At the same time, keeping a sense of distance from disadvantaged people can give them a certain sense of psychological security, which can facilitate further communication.
